Gogu Constantinescu is the Romanian engineer who laid the foundations of the sonicity theory, and the one whose invention can be said to have helped British aviation to tip the scales in its favor during the First World War.
George (Gogu) Constantinescu was a innovator, inventor, complex scientist, a specialist in vibration theory, aerodynamics, fluid mechanics and a Romanian engineer, who lived most of his life in the United Kingdom.
He is the author of hundreds of patents patented in Great Britain, France USA, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Romania and of works of research of enormous value, some of which remained unknown to the general public as a result of the secrecy given by their predominantly military uses.

Gogu Constantinescu was born in Craiova, on October 4, 1881 and graduated, as head of promotion, in 1904, the National School of Bridges and Roads.
In the years after graduation, he was mainly concerned with reinforced concrete theory, was an engineer in charge of the execution of several important bridges and buildings in Bucharest, being, among others, the craftsman of the concrete vault of the former headquarters of the Chamber of Deputies from Mitropoliei Hill.
He was one of the first to use reinforced concrete in the construction of buildings in Romania. Among the buildings built by him we list: Constanta Casino, Peris Water Castle, bridges over the river Siret from Adjud, Racatau, Roman, Patriarchate Palace, Athénée Palace Hotel, Grand Mosque of Constanta (Carol I Mosque).
The emergence of sonicity theory
Concerned with scientific research, Gogu Constantinescu settled in Great Britain, the results of his activity leading to the introduction of a new science: sonicity - a branch of continuous media mechanics which deals with the transmission of mechanical power through vibrations in fluid and solid environments.
He laid the foundation for the theory of sonicity that allows using the compressibility of liquids (or fluids in general) to transmit power through vibrations (oscillations), by using existing mathematical models in the field of electricity. The compressibility of liquids is generally ignored in physics textbooks because for most practical applications their effect is negligible and the complexity of their inclusion would be too great for the minor effect they have. The first patents were denied in America because the management of the patent institute considered the inventions unfeasible precisely because of the theory of liquid incompressibility.
Among the applications of his theory are several inventions that bear his signature: sonic motors, pumps, hammers, sonic drills, sonic injectors, torque converters (with the help of which he made the first automatic gearbox), sonic energy generators and a series of devices for sonic transmissions and receivers of this energy.
Constantine Fire Control Gear
One of the most important achievements of Gogu Constantinescu is an innovation brought in military aviation, in the First World War: the device for firing at any engine speed through the disk formed by the rotating propeller blades, a device called GC Gear (Constantinesco Fire Control Gear) .
The first invention to prove that sonication is a viable science was the Constantinesco Fire Control Gear.
Made of 50000 copies for English aviation, the device regulates the fire of the machine gun so that the bullets pass synchronously between the blades of the propeller, without hitting them regardless of the engine speed of the aircraft, increasing firing efficiency and allowing aviators to attack the enemy head-on.
Gogu Constantinescu, by what he did, can be a model for many of today's young people, for the young people of tomorrow and, perhaps, for many other generations. As a tribute to the remarkable results obtained in the activity of scientific research, promotion of invention, as well as for the contribution to the international recognition of Romanian creativity, Craiova City Hall awarded Gogu Constantinescu, post-mortem, in 2019, the title of Honorary Citizen of the Municipality of Craiova.
