Identifying problems
In recent years, Huawei has launched a series of top smartphones, including the P series, which has been well received by users around the world. One of the most popular models in this series is the Huawei P20, which was launched in 2018.
Although the Huawei P20 was designed to be durable and resistant, some users have reported problems with USB Type-C ports after several years of use, the phone having intermittent contact when charging, or the data could not be transferred over the cable. Of course, all this, after the plug has been cleaned using different methods.
£10 for two more years of use
In my case, I didn't report this problem because the phone was out of warranty, so I decided to fix it myself. After opening the phone, I noticed that the USB Type-C port shows solder cracks on almost all terminals it, which affected the connectivity and charging of the device. See detailed photos of this issue below.

However, I was impressed by the performance and features of the Huawei P20 and decided to look for a solution to fix the problem. I want to mention that at the same time I had problems with the Jack plug, all of this after 4 years of continuous use of the phone. It no longer made contact with the headphones at all, it being full of foreign particles (dirt), which I could not clean.
Thus, since the PCB with the charging port and headphone jack showed too much wear, I decided to replace it with a new one. And if I still changed the board with the charging port, I decided to change the battery as well because it also showed a certain degree of wear. This whole investment cost me £10 🙂 And that's how I chose one refurbished phone, which will probably still work two years from now.
How do you change the PCB with the charging port and headphone jack on the Huawei P20 Lite?
Replacing the PCB (printed circuit board) with the charging port and headphone jack on the Huawei P20 Lite involves the following steps:
- Before starting any replacement operation, make sure you have a suitable tool kit for disassembling the phone and that you have the necessary knowledge to carry out this operation.
- Start by turning off the phone and removing the SIM card and the microSD memory card.
- Open the back cover and remove all the screws and the two screws located next to the USB Type-C port and the headphone jack.
- Use a suction cup to gently lift the back cover.
- Use a knife or a spatula to carefully separate the connection cable that connects the PCB to the screen and the phone's battery.
- Remove the fixing screws of the PCB and lift it slightly to remove it from its location.
- Disconnect the cables connecting the charging port and headphone jack to the PCB.
- Install the new PCB with the charging port and headphone jack, making sure all cables are properly connected.
- Assemble the phone in the reverse order of disassembly.
- Turn on the phone and check if the charging port and headphone jack are working properly.
Note: It is important to follow the instructions carefully and be careful not to damage other phone components during the PCB replacement process. If you are not sure of your abilities to perform this operation, it is recommended to consult a phone repair specialist or contact an authorized Huawei service.

Tips for using USB Type-C ports and cables
USB Type-C ports are quite robust and resistant. They were designed to be reversible and to be able to support a variety of communication protocols, such as USB 3.1, Thunderbolt 3, DisplayPort and others.
Although USB Type-C ports are designed to be durable and reliable, they are not immune to damage and wear and tear over time. For example, USB Type-C cables they can be damaged if they are bent excessively or if they are pulled with force. Also, USB Type-C ports can be affected by dust, dirt and other foreign particles that can prevent the correct connection.
In general, it is important to take care of USB Type-C ports and treat them with care to avoid damaging them. It is also recommended to use high quality cables and adapters and to change them if they start to show signs of wear.
